Thanks! Can I come back?

May 22nd, 2010

My tour to the US has come to an end. After finishing up with two amazing house concerts in New England, I’m back in Canada for a show at New Brunswick’s Vintage Bistro (14 Centennial Drive, Hampton NB) tonight.

I’m so grateful for everyone who came out to the shows, to the wonderful venues and the generous hosts who had house concerts and put me up. I met some amazing people at the shows and gathered some very memorable stories. Thanks for sharing them with me.

While I was in the US, I collaborated with an artist from Wisconsin to make a brand new merch line of one of a kind canvas bags with my lyrics embroidered on them. Check out the video above for a sneak peek and look for a new section on the website that will feature them. Very exciting!

Let’s talk about House Concerts…

May 18th, 2010

Thanks to everyone who came out to the shows in the Midwest section of my US tour. Milwaukee, Chicago, Madison and all the towns in between were kind and generous. I honestly can’t wait to come back… so I will soon.

I’m back on the east coast of the US now. This week I’ll be doing some House Concerts on my way back home to Canada.

Never been to a house concert? Want to host one? They’re easy. You bring your friends, I bring my guitar. Simple, right? I’ve posted a new video from a House Concert I played in Illinois last week. And while I don’t require a spotlight at all times, (serisouly, I’m a Cape Bretoner and I’m not that high maintenance!) this will give you an idea of what a House Concert can be like.

I play House Concerts all over North America so if you’d like to have me do a show in your home, get in touch and we’ll give you the details.

Oh my, the tour is almost over. Here’s what’s left:

May 20 – House Concert, Easton, New Hampshire
(contact carmel@carmelmikol.com for info)

May 21 – House Concert, Albany, New York
(contact carmel@carmelmikol.com for info)

May 22 – Vintage Bistro, Hampton, New Brunswick
(8:30pm $10 tickets available at the door)

Into the Desert… a new song from the road

May 14th, 2010

At Stage Left in Woodstock, IL backed by a band so large they don't fit in the picture

Well this tour is shaping up to be a truly enriching experience. Each show has surpassed even my most optimistic expectations. On Wednesday night in Woodstock, Illinois I sang to a full house and was backed by an eight piece band for a few songs off ‘In My Bones.” What a treat!

Last night I had an amazing time at the Racine Arts Council’s Artspace where I was able to reconnect with some old friends and meet lots of new ones. I played a newer song called ‘Into the Desert’ and I’ve posted the video above. Thanks to everyone who came to the show and for singer/songwriter Rob Reid for coming up from Chicago to join me for the show.

I also premiered a new merch line created by American artist Tu Madre using my lyrics… I’ll explain soon;)

Next up? Milwaukee and Chicago… two of my favorite cities! See you at the next show…

Folk Legends & Storytellers

May 11th, 2010

There was a time when folk singers hopped trains, traveled the country by foot and sang about real people – workers, men lost at war, and the injustices inherent to rapid industrialization. Maybe that sounds like some kind of folk-singer-hero stereotype, but I had the pleasure to open for one of America’s old-time folk legends in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin the other night… and I’ll tell you that this kind of folk singer still exists.

Larry Penn is an unassuming 80+ year old. He dons a worn pair of jeans, suspenders and a simple button-up shirt. He sips several glasses of brandy throughout the evening. He sings old railroad songs and tells stories about the IWW and unsung heroes from the ’20s and ’30s, everything from the famous “Danville Girl” to “Kettle Valley Rail” (which he kindly introduces as a song for “our Canadian young lady”). He’s a true storyteller – sometimes it’s hard to tell where a story ends and a song begins. He speaks fondly of his years on the road with the famous Utah Phillips (labor organizer and folk singer) and his inclusion on the recently Grammy-nominated compilation of Utah Phillips songs.

I just sit and listen, soaking in the perfect, simple, timeless songs… wishing I could find a way to summon those brilliant troubadours of the past for just one song of my own.

Littering the streets with songs…

May 9th, 2010
I’m in the Midwest section of the tour. Yesterday was spent in Madison, Wisconsin, exploring some of the old places I used to hang at a few years ago and I decided to litter the streets with a few of my songs. “Blaming Myself” is posted above, recorded live in a little alleyway downtown Madison.
I had an amazing time last night at Cafe Carpe in Fort Atkinson where I learned about trains, hobos and the true stories of old folk troubadours and Wobblies (IWW). But that’s a story for another day…
