Vote for “Never Promised You Nothing” for ECMA Award

March 15th, 2014

The East Coast Music Association celebrates the hard work of maritime artists every year. I love to see my friends doing well and it’s fun to have a small part in helping them do great work.

This year two good friends are up for ECMA awards for projects that I contributed to. Rachel Davis, of late a world traveler with the band Coig,  put out a gorgeous solo album this year called Turns. She was kind enough to record my song “Over the Mountain” and sang her heart out on it. That album is up for Rising Star Recording of the Year and Traditional Instrumental Recording of the Year.

I co-write three songs for Kim Wempe’s 2013 release Coalition and she recorded two of my songs as well. She’s up for Pop Recording of the Year and Fan’s Choice Video of the Year. The video that’s up for the award is a song I wrote a few years back called “Never Promised You Nothing.” You can  watch the video then VOTE once a day for that video here:

I couldn’t be more excited to announce the return of the Roots to the Future new creation project at Celtic Colours International Festival this year! Roots to the future is new and old: contemporary songwriting meets traditional tune making. It represents how young artists are interpreting, re-inventing and carrying the spirit and tradition of Cape Breton music.

Roots to the future began in 2010 when I had an idea: I wanted to know if other songwriters and  non-trad cape Breton artists were using those celtic influences in their own modern music like I was… and Celtic Colours Int’l Festival wanted to know too!

The 2010 Roots show, with an amazing line up of eight young Cape Breton artists sparked an array of new compositions.
This year, we have another great line up of diverse artists – some of the strongest members of the traditional music community matched with award-winning songwriters.

You don’t want to miss what happens when fiddler Colin Grant and multi-instrumentalist Darren McMullen hang out with a folkie
songwriter like me.  Or percussionist and songwriter Keith Mullins pairs up with fiddler Rachel Davis.  Or how about when we put rocker Carmen Townsend in the same rooms as piper Kenneth MacKenzie? There’s a lot of new music happening at Roots to the Future this year!

Come see us: Friday October 12th at 7:30pm at the Big Pond Community Fire Hall.

Florida recap, March release + upcoming shows!

January 25th, 2010

Hey Folks!

Lots of news these days. I had an amazing time at the 30A Songwriter’s Festival in Seaside, Florida. I played three shows there and all of them were packed with wonderful, appreciate audiences. And of course… I met some people from Nova Scotia! It always great to have a connection to home even when I’m far away. I also met some amazing musicians from all over the US (not to mention some wonderful people like Shawn Mullins, John Oates, Rodney Crowell and lots of songwriters from Nashville). I can’t wait to go back down south to do more shows, that’s for sure.

Now that I’m back home, I hard at work getting ready for my album release March 30th, 2010. I can’t tell you how excited I am to finally be releasing this record. It’s the culmination of a life long dream for me AND it’s just the beginning of so much more. You can still pre-order the new album through my website to get a personalized copy before it’s available in stores.
